Tartans Split on Day Two
Oct. 2 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The volleyball team of Carnegie Mellon salvaged day two of first round action against University Athletic Association (UAA) teams. The Tartans split in action against #6 New York University and University of Chicago, moving to 13-7 on the season and 1-2 in association play.
Opening the day with a loss 0-3 ( 19-30, 28-30, 22-30) to NYU, the Tartans came back to defeat the Maroons of Chicago 3-1.
Leading the way for Carnegie Mellon in the first match was junior setter Brea Carlock (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) with 25 assists and three service aces. Junior right side hitter Catie Fisher (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfeild) had nine kills and one service ace offensively, while juniors Malena Yablinsky (Patton, Pa./Cambria Heights) and Becky Metler (McLean, Va./Kent Place (N.J.)) each totaled seven kills.
Defensively for the Tartans against NYU, junior libero Kat Fox (Oklahoma City, Okla./Cassidy) had 16 digs and junior Amanda Bradford (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had seven. Both senior MH Chrissy Bartek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Metler came up big at the net with four and three blocks, respectively.
In the win over Chicago (25-30, 30-24, 30-22, 30-22), Yablinsky and Bradford led the offense. Yablinsky finished with 14 kills, while Bradford picked up 13. Both Bartek and Metler tallied 10 kills apiece. Carlock was big again with 48 assists and five service aces.
Bartek and Fisher both totaled three blocks at the net, while Fox collected three service aces and five digs. Bradford led the team in digs with nine.
The team travels to Washington (Mo.) University for the second round of the UAA Tournament next weekend on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15. They will start the weekend against Brandeis (Mass.) University at 12:30 p.m. and follow that match against Emory (Ga.) University at 3 p.m.
