Volleyball Finishes 7th in Tough Weekend Tournament
Sept. 10 - (BEREA, Ohio) – Carnegie Mellon’s volleyball team traveled to Berea, Ohio for the Fifth Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament held by Baldwin-Wallace College. The Tartans dropped all three of their pool play games but battled back with a win to salvage the weekend.
On opening night, the Tartans started against Hope (Mich.) College with a 30-26 game one win but lost all momentum as Hope came back to win the next three games 30-16, 30-17, 30-20. Junior right side hitter Catie Fisher (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the Tartan offense with 12 kills and also picked up 11 digs. Junior libero Kat Fox (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) led the defense with 16 digs, while junior OH Amanda Bradford (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) also tallied 11 digs.
In the second game of the night, Carnegie Mellon faced the host Yellow Jackets falling 0-3 (21-30, 15-30, 29-31). Fisher again led the attack with 12 kills. Defensively, Bradford totaled 17 digs, while Fox and Fisher tallied 16 and 10 digs, respectively.
After falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater 0-3 (21-30, 19-30, 17-30), the Tartans beat-up on Oberlin (Ohio) College 3-0, with game scores of 30-16, 30-8, 30-25. Junior setter Brea Carlock (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) gathered 38 assists, dishing 14 to Fisher. Bradford and junior MH Becky Metler (McLean, Va./Kent Place (N.J.)) put together eight and seven kills apiece, while Fox served four aces. Bradford and Fox led the defense with 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Freshman Liz DeVleming (Mercer Island, Wash.) also chipped in with two service aces.
The Tartans return to the court for their first non-tournament game when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a non-conference match, Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m.
