Women’s Track & Field Places Ninth at Western PA Championships

Mar. 29 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s track and field team opened their outdoor season with the Western Pennsylvania Track and Field Championships on the campus of Carnegie Mellon. The Tartans placed ninth out of 15 teams with 42 points at the two day event. Division I Saint Francis University won the team title with 157 points.

Sami Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.97 meters, smashing her indoor season best. Freshman
Courtney Baker (Fairfax, Va./Nashoba Regional) finished third in the 400 meters, crossing the line in a personal best time of 60.69 seconds. Three Tartans scored points in the 800 meters with senior
Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) placing third (2:24.44), sophomore
Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) finishing sixth (2:27.84) and freshman
Laura McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) crossing the line seventh (2:28.18).
The Carnegie Mellon 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Bakelmun, Mattingly, sophomore
Crystal LeePow (Montclair, N.J.), and Baker finished second with a time of 4:11.11 and the Carnegie Mellon 4x100 meter relay team placed fifth (53.32 seconds). Krutz ran in the 10,000 meters on Friday and placed fourth in a time of 42:49.
LePow was the top Tartan in the 400 meter hurdles, placing ninth in 71.24 seconds. Simmons added an 11th place finish in the long jump (4.90 meters) and a 12th place finish in the 200 meters (27.50 seconds). Junior
Jennifer Kim (Park Ridge, N.J.) was first on the team and 11th overall in the hammer throw Friday afternoon with a throw of 32.13 meters. Sophomore
Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md.) placed 11th overall in the pole vault with a vault of 2.43 meters.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s outdoor track and field team will be in action again next weekend, April 4 and 5, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.
