Women’s Track and Field Faces Stiff Competition at State Farm Games

Feb. 2 – (MORGANTOWN, W. Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s indoor track and field team competed at the State Farm Games hosted by West Virginia University on Saturday, February 2. The unscored meet was held at the WVU Shell Building.
The Tartans went up against strong competition with West Virginia, Robert Morris, and Slippery Rock among the schools in attendance. The Tartans collected a pair of second place finishes courtesy of two freshmen.
Courtney Baker (Fairfax, Va./Nashoba Regional) lowered her 400 meter dash time to 62.93 seconds and
Laura McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) ran slightly faster than a week ago in the 800 meters (2:29.40) to place second.
Seniors
Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and
Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 500 meters. Bakelmun crossed the line in 1:23.61 and Ormon was right behind her at 1:23.78. Junior
Sami Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) increased her triple jump distance to 10.40 meters en route to placing sixth along with an eighth place finish in the high jump (4.74 m). Freshman
Melissa Hwang (Paramus, N.J.) also came in eighth in the high jump at 4.74 m.
Sophomore
Crystal LeePow (Montclair, N.J.) placed ninth in the 800 meters (2:36.15) and sophomore
Rotimi Abimbola (Potomac, Md./Connelly School of the Holy Child) finished first on the Tartans and 22nd overall in the 200 meter dash (28.79 seconds).
The Tartan women’s indoor track and field team will return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
