Women’s Track & Field Hosts Senior Meet

Apr. 26 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s track and field team hosted what was for most their final competition of the season on Saturday, April 26. The team hosted an unscored meet against competition from Duquesne, Franciscan, Allegheny, and Slippery Rock. The meet provided the setting for good performances and was a good way to honor the Carnegie Mellon graduating seniors.
Sophomore
Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) came close to setting a school record and hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800 meters as she won in a personal best time of 2:16.49. Junior
Sami Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) won the 200 meter dash in 27.66 and sophomore
Rotimi Abimbola (Potomac, Md./Connelly School of the Holy Child) won the 100 meter dash in 13.98 seconds. Abimbola also placed second in the 200 meters (28.29 seconds).

Emily Giacomarra (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional), freshman
Morgan Faer (Newton, Mass./Newton North), sophomore
Roxana Viray (Keyport, N.J.), and freshman
Melissa Hwang (Paramus, N.J.). Giacomarra edged Faer 17.35 to 17.36 seconds, Viray crossed the line in 18.06, and Hwang finished in 18.11 seconds. Sophomore
Crystal Lee Pow (Montclair, N.J.) finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (69.46 seconds), freshman
Heather Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) finished fourth in the 400 meters (67.32 seconds), and freshman
Amal El-Ghazaly (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) finished fourth in the 3000 meters (12:44.73).
Simmons placed second in the triple jump (10.98 m) and third in the long jump (4.95 m). Freshman
Kim Nederlof (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) finished fourth in the discus (27.11 m) and Faer took fifth in the hammer (34.31 m). The Carnegie Mellon women’s 4x400 meter relay team finished first with a time of 4:31.62.
Some Carnegie Mellon athletes will continue competing with the next meet occurring on Friday, May 9 at Allegheny College.
