Stats

Feb. 23 – (KENT, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s indoor track and field team traveled west into Ohio yet again to compete, this time to Kent State University on Saturday, February 23. The unscored meet was unique for the running component of the team as Kent State’s track is 292 meters instead of the usual 200 meters. Possibly as a result, many Tartan runners clocked personal bests during the course of the day.

Sophomore Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) became the first lady Tartan this season to break one minute in the 400 meter dash as she came in 12th with a time of 59.63 seconds setting a school record. Freshman Courtney Baker (Fairfax, Va./Nashoba Regional) added a 21st place finish in a personal best time of 61.34 seconds. Junior Sami Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) produced the team’s fastest 200 meter time also setting a school record (27.20 seconds) as she placed 25th overall. Freshman Laura McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) improved on her already solid time in the mile run with a 5:27.90 performance, good for 22nd overall.

Senior Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) ran her fastest 800 meter time of the season as she placed 15th overall (2:26.15). Senior Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) added a 2:28.80 (22nd) and sophomore Crystal LeePow’s (Montclair, N.J.) came through in 2:29.58 (24th), both season bests. Junior Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shady Side Academy) was able to improve her 3000 meter time by seven seconds from last week en route to placing 34th with a time of 11:54.26.

Freshman Morgan Faer (Newton, Mass./Newton North) was the top Tartan in both the 60 meter hurdles and the shot put as she finished 29th in the hurdles (10.38 seconds) and 33rd in the shot put (9.15 meters). Freshman Melissa Hwang (Paramus, N.J.) finished tenth in the long jump with a  jump of 4.23 meters and sophomore Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md.) put forth a season best effort in the pole vault as she vaulted 2.60 meters (18th overall).

The Carnegie Mellon 4x400 meter relay team placed ninth with a season best and school record time of 4:06.06.

The Tartan women’s indoor track and field team will next compete at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships held this year at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 9.
