Women’s Track & Field Places Sixth at UAA Championships

Mar. 3 – (WALTHAM, Mass.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s indoor track and field team competed at the 2007 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, held at Brandeis University. The Tartans finished with 22 team points good for sixth place, improving on their seventh place finish last year at this championship meet.
Sophomore Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) brought home the Tartans’ lone first place finish, as she won the high jump with a school record height of 1.66 meters. The top six finishers in each event scored points for their respective teams at the championship meet. Senior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) scored points for the team with her fourth place finish in the weight throw (season best of 13.15 meters). Junior Adriane Soehner (Honeoyo Falls, N.Y./Honeoyo Fall-Lima) added a sixth place finish in the event with a distance of 12.81 meters.
Carnegie Mellon’s two relay teams each scored points for the Tartans, with the 4x400 meter relay team finishing third and the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team placing sixth. The Tartans’ 4x400 meter relay “A” team consisting of sophomore Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), senior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet), junior Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Nagnet), and freshman Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) crossed the line in a season best of 4:08.79. The DMR consisted of freshman Danielle Sedlack (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Andreozzi, senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd), and sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.). Sedlack ran the 1200 m leg, Andreozzi raced the 400 m leg, Castillo ran the 800 m leg, and Clayton finished with the 1600 m leg, crossing the line in 13:06.54.
Ormon also raced in the 400 meters and finished eighth, setting a school record of 1:01.38 in the process. Ormon also competed in the 200 meters, finishing 13th (27.66), right behind Andreozzi’s 12th place finish (27.65). Senior Heidi Grothaus (Carlinville, Ill./Illinois Math & Sci. Acad.) and freshman Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) both competed in the pole vault, with Grothaus finishing seventh (2.71 m) and Lenhart eighth (2.56 m). Metler and Soehner both competed in the shot put as well, with Metler placing ninth (11.09 m) and Soehner 11th (10.71 m).
Meng also competed in the long jump and the triple jump for the Tartans. She finished 12th in the long jump (4.71 m) and seventh in the triple jump (10.42 m). Clayton and Castillo both raced the mile, finishing 13th and 14th, respectively. Clayton crossed the line in 5:34.68 and Castillo ran a 5:37.91. Junior
Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) was the top finisher for the Tartans in the 800 meters, finishing tenth in 2:27.44. Sophomore
Emily Giacomarra (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) finished tenth in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 9.70 seconds and Sedlack finished 14th in the 3000 meters with a personal best time of 11:15.84.
