Women’s Track and Field Takes Third at Bennie Benson Invite

Apr. 14 – (MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team competed at the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational hosted by Robert Morris University on Saturday, April 14. The team finished in third place out of six teams with 81.50 points. Robert Morris won the invitational with a total of 242.50 points.
Sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.) and senior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) each took home individual titles as Clayton ran a personal best 4:57.66 en route to winning the 1500 meter run and Metler won the hammer throw with a throw of 43.52 meters. Sophomore Jess Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) contributed a second place finish of 1.55 meters in the high jump.
Senior Stef Penn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) placed fourth in the 5000 meters with a time of 20:27.00. Sophomore Samantha Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) finished seventh to lead the team in both the 100 meter dash (14.08 seconds) and the long jump (4.71 m), with Meng taking eighth in the long jump (4.39 m). Meng also competed in the triple jump, leading the team with a fifth place finish (10.06 m). Other fifth places finishes were Metler in the shot put (10.85 m), sophomore Emily Giacomarra (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) in the 200 meters (29.67 seconds), and freshman Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) in the 800 meters (2:31.86). Senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) finished sixth, right behind Mattingly in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.50.
Other running events saw Giacomarra place sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.77 seconds) and sophomore Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shady Side Academy) finish sixth (20:38.61) and junior Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) place seventh (20:41.32) in the 5000 meters.
Senior Heidi Grothaus (Carlinville, Ill./Illinois Math & Sci. Acad.) led the Tartans in the pole vault, with a seventh place finish of 2.59 meters. Senior Lizza McGregor (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) was the top Tartan in the discus with a throw of 29.66 m and in the javelin with a throw of 25.21 m. McGregor also placed seventh in the shot put (8.33 m) and ninth in the hammer throw (25.70 m). Metler added an eighth place finish in the discus (29.00 m) and a twelfth place finish in the javelin (23.70 m) to her victory in the hammer.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team will next compete in the University Athletic Association Championships at Emory University on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. They will look to improve upon their sixth place finish at last year’s championships.
