Women’s Track and Field Wraps Up Home Schedule

Apr. 10 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Cold temperatures and sunny skies saw the Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team host the Carnegie Mellon Tri-Meet on Tuesday, April 10. The unscored meet consisted of Seton Hill, Pitt-Johnstown, Waynesburg, and the host Tartans.
Carnegie Mellon collected five first place finishes out of the 18 event meet. Junior Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) won her first ever race as she won the 5000 meter run with a time of 20:16.08. Sophomore Jess Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) won the triple jump with a distance of 10.31 meters and junior Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Nagnet) won the 400 meters in 1:02.13. Freshman Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) used a strong finish to win the 400 meter hurdles in 1:10.36 and senior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) won the hammer throw with a distance of 44.78 m.
Metler also added a pair of second place finishes in the shot put (11.33 m) and the discus (35.45 m) and Meng added a tie for second place in the high jump (1.57 m). Senior Heidi Grothaus (Carlinville, Ill./Illinois Math & Sci. Acad.) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 2.74 m. Sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.) finished second in the 1500 meters (5:14.98) with senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) finishing right on her heels in third place (5:15.89). Other third place finishes for Carnegie Mellon were junior Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) in the 800 meter race (2:29.81), sophomore Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) in the 200 meters (28.70), sophomore Samantha Simmons (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) in the triple jump (10.09 m), and freshman Roxana Viray (Keyport, N.J.) in the 110 meter high hurdles (18.66 seconds).
The Tartans took second in both relays as their 4x100 meter relay team crossed the line in 52.87 seconds and their 4x400 meter relay team finished in 4:16.56.
The women’s team will be in action again on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to Robert Morris University for the Bennie Benson Invitational. The invitational is scheduled to begin at 10 am.
