Strong Competition Tests Women’s Track and Field

Feb. 10 – (LEWISBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team competed at the Bucknell Winter Games in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday, February 10. The unscored meet saw the Tartans competing against Division I teams like Bucknell and Duquesne.
Junior Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) was the top finisher for the Tartans on the day with her third place performance in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:27.82 is her fastest this season. Sophomore Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished fourth in the triple jump in what was a season-best distance of 10.40 meters. Meng also finished tied for eighth in the high jump (1.50 m) and eleventh in the long jump (in a season best 4.65 m).
The Tartans’ 4x400 meter relay “A” team consisting of sophomore Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), senior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet), junior Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Nagnet), and freshman Diane Mattingly (Leonardtown, Md.) finished fourth with a time of 4:16.47, and the 4x400 meter relay “B” team consisting of Bakelmun, senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd), sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.), and junior Kelly Mingle (Danville, Pa.) took home eighth place with a time of 4:31.91.
The pair of Adriane Soehner (Honeoyo Falls, N.Y./Honeoyo Fall-Lima) and Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) represented the Tartans in the throwing events. Soehner placed sixth in the shot put (10.54 m) and tenth in the weight throw (12.02 m), while Metler took eighth in the shot put (10.36 m) and ninth in the weight throw (season best of 12.68 m).
In other running events, Mattingly and Mingle took seventh and eighth respectively in the 500 meters. Mattingly finished in 1:24.21 and Mingle crossed the line in 1:27.77. Andreozzi finished 13th in the 200 in a season-best of 27.86 and Ormon placed 12th in the 400 in a season best of 1:02.60. Freshman Timi Abimbola (Potomac, Md./Connelly School of the Holy Child) made the finals of the 60 meter dash and finished 13th with a time of 8.70.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team will compete again this Saturday, February 17 at Kent St. University.
