Women’s Track & Field Finish Third at Washington & Jefferson Invite

Apr. 8 - (WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s track & field team competed at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday, April 8 and came away with a third place finish of 117 points, finishing behind team champion Allegheny College (197.5 points) and host Washington & Jefferson College (143 points). The ten team invite witnessed cold temperatures and overcast skies for the first half of the meet before the sun finally made an appearance to produce a pleasant late afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

Two seniors took home individual championships as Jocelyn Sikora (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:23.82 and Drea Garvue (Bellevue, Wash./Northwest) won the 5000 meter race with a time of 18:56.42. Junior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet) took second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02:30 and later took fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 28:04. Junior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) put together a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.05 meters and added a fifth place finish in the discus with a throw of 29.20 meters.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s 4x400 meter relay team came in second with a time of 4:15.91 and the women’s 4x100 meter relay team took fourth with a time of 54.30. Sophomore Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) came in third with a time of 2:26.93 in the 800 meter run and senior Carrie Mallozzi (Trumbull Conn.) finished third in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:35.66. Senior Kim Kicielinski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 13:09.89.

Freshman Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took home fifth place finishes in both the triple jump (4.58 meters) and long jump (10.13 meters), sophomore Allison Hannan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) came in fifth in the pole vault with a height of 2.43 meters, and sophomore Adriane Soehner (Honeoyo Falls, N.Y./Honeoyo Fall-Lima) came in fourth in the discus with a throw of 29.89 meters. In other running events senior K.J. Helmstetter (Beavercreek, Ohio/Miami Valley) and sophomore Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) came in fourth and fifth in the 5000 meters with times of 19:46.00 and 20:07.52. Sophomore Kelly Mingle (Danville, Pa.) was able to collect a fifth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.72 and freshman Jacki Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) took fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 28:05.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s track & field team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 11, when they host Waynesburg University in a small, dual meet at Gesling Stadium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. with races beginning at around 4:30 p.m.
