Women’s Track and Field Host Western Pa. Championships

Apr. 1 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon women’s outdoor track and field team hosted the 16 team Western Pennsylvania Track & Field Championships on Saturday, April 1. The Tartans finished 13th overall with 16 points. The University of Pittsburgh came in first with 203 points, finishing comfortably ahead of both Duquesne University (136.5) and Robert Morris University (112.5). The athletes dealt with windy conditions throughout the day, but the rain held off with the temperatures hovering in the 50s.

Carnegie Mellon junior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) competed well, as she finished eighth in the shot put (10.67 meters) and ninth in the discus throw (33.21 meters) on Saturday.

The Tartans ran well in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays with the 4x800 team of junior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet), senior Jocelyn Sikora (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), junior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd), and sophomore Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) coming in fifth with a time of 10:15.21. The 4x400 team consisting of Bakelmun, sophomore Shauna Ormon (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Nagnet), freshman Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), and freshman Danielle Millett (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) wound up twelfth with a time of 4:23.71.

Sikora followed up her performance in the 4x800 relay by finishing sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.43. Freshman Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was the lone Tartan in the high jump as she finished tenth overall with a jump of 1.50 meters.

Fellow seniors K.J. Helmstetter (Beavercreek, Ohio/Miami Valley) and Kelly Cronin (Chatham, N.J.) competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Helmstetter finished third with a time of 12:10.1 and Cronin had a time of 13:10.7 resulting in a seventh place finish.

The next race for the Carnegie Mellon women’s outdoor track and field team is the Washington & Jefferson/Denison Invite on Saturday, April 8 in Washington, Pa.
