Women's Track and Field Finish Sixth at UAA Championships

Apr. 23 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon women's track and field team finished sixth out of seven teams at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Case Western University on April 22 and April 23. The Tartans finished with 65 points with Washington University in St. Louis finishing first with 227.5 points.

The Tartans collected a quartet of second place finishes, courtesy of junior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) in the hammer throw, freshman Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in the high jump, senior Drea Garvue (Bellevue, Wash./Northwest) in the 10,000 meters, and senior K.J. Helmstetter (Beavercreek, Ohio/Miami Valley) in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Metler threw a personal best 45.07 meters, breaking her own school record, in the hammer throw and added to that a third place finish in the shot put (11.60 meters). Meng collected a height of 1.57 meters in the high jump and added to that a third place finish in the triple jump (10.93 meters). Garvue finished the 10,000 meter run in a personal best time of 39:52.03 and Helmstetter ran an 11:53.02 in the steeplechase.

The women's 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams both finished fifth as the tandem of senior Jocelyn Sikora (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), junior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet), sophomore Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), and freshman Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) ran the 4x400 in 4:10.80 and Fuller, Bakelmun, Sikora, and junior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) crossed the line in 9:42.09 in the 4x800. Sikora also ran in the 1500 meter race, coming in seventh with a time of 4:48.95, and Bakelmun took seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25.24. Fuller finished eighth in the 400 meter run, crossing the line in 1:01.36.

Metler got help in the throwing events with sophomore Adriane Soehner (Honeoyo Falls, N.Y./Honeoyo Fall-Lima) finishing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 10.91 meters and junior Lizza McGregor (Ellisville, Mo./Lafayette) coming in fifth in the discus throw (35.91 meters).
