Women’s Track and Field Triumphs at CMU Invite

Apr. 10 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team defeated Waynesburg College and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown at the CMU Invite on Tuesday, April 11 by collecting 123 points to Waynesburg’s 89 and UPJ’s 70. The three-team meet was met with a beautiful day with temperatures in the 70s and not a cloud in the sky.

Senior Jocelyn Sikora (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) was victorious in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.65 and freshman Jessica Meng (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) won the triple jump with a distance of 10.86 meters (35'7.75''). Meng went on to add a second place finish in the high jump (1.55 meters/5'1''). The other first place finish for the women’s team occurred in the 4x400 meter relay with Carnegie Mellon’s “A” team of freshman Jackie Andreozzi (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), sophomore Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), junior Amber Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif./F Bravo Medical Magnet), and Sikora finishing in a time of 4:12.58.

The Tartans collected a handful of second place finishes, including a personal best time for Andreozzi in the 400 meters (1:02.25), a personal best time for freshman Carolyn Clayton (Northhampton, Mass.) in the 1500 meters (5:16.82), junior Lizza McGregor (Ellisville, MO/Lafayette) in the discus (34.12 meters/111'11'') and junior Becky Metler (Bridgewater, N.J./Kent Place) in both the shot put and the hammer throw (11.48 meters/37'8'' and 40.85 meters/134', respectively).

Additionally for the women, sophomores Allison Hannan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Adriane Soehner (Honeoyo Falls, N.Y./Honeoyo Falls- Lima) were top scorers in their respective events for Carnegie Mellon. Hannan finished third overall, but first of scored participants in the pole vault with a jump of 8'6'' and Schoener finished as the Tartans top long jump participant with a leap of 4.30 meters or 14'1.25''.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team will split up this weekend, with some of the distance runners racing Friday, April 14 at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic while everyone else will compete Saturday, April 15 at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
