Tartans Split Two Matches
Oct. 6 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted two matches on Saturday, October 6 spliting the decisions. The first match pitted the Tartans against the Washington & Lee Generals, last year's NCAA Champion, with the second match versus Grove City College. W&L was able to sneak out a 5-4 victory while Carnegie Mellon defeated the Wolverines 9-0. The Tartans are now 1-2 in dual matches this year.
Against W&L, the doubles pairs of Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) and Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) and Kelly Hart (Montecito, Calif./Santa Barbara) and Ashley Herrick (Cleveland, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) gave the Tartans a 2-1 lead with victories at number one and two, respectively. Hart and sophomore Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) earned the other two points for the Tartans with wins at number three and five singles, respectively. Hart's match went to a third set tiebreaker which she won 7-5, 3-6, 14-12. Liebowitz also played a tiebreaker in her second set winning 6-4, 7-6 (11-9).
Carnegie Mellon swept Grove City with a lineup change. Hart and Herrick teamed up at number one doubles to win 8-1, while Brooke Loar (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Kelly Nakamura (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Punahou) won 8-1 at number two doubles and Liebowitz and Samantha Schultz (Okemos, Mich.) took the third pairing 8-2.
Danielle Rosenfeld (Gladwyne, Pa./Harriton) and Schultz each won their singles matches by 6-0, 6-1 scores while Hart and Herrick blanked their opponents in the second set with 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0 wins.
The Tartans are in action again when they travel to the ITA Nationals on October 11-14.
