#7 Tartan Women Fall to DI Opponent
Mar. 25 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team welcomed Division I University of Pittsburgh to campus on Tuesday, March 25 for an afternoon match on a windy afternoon. The #7 Tartans fell 7-1 against the Panthers who are now 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Big East Conference.
Freshman duo Kelly Hart (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Joaquin) and Ashley Herrick (Amherst, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) won the lone point for the Tartans (11-4) with an 8-5 win at number two doubles. Senior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) and freshman Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) nearly defeated Pitt's number one doubles team of Kristy Borza and Elizabeth Adams but fell in the end 8-6.
Pitt swept the singles matches but Chui put forth a tremendous effort at number two singles nearly coming from behind. Chui dropped the first set 6-1 but battled back to take the second by a 7-5 score. The third set tiebreaker was a battle as well but Sabrina Visram was able to put Chui away with at 10-5 win.
Staloch nearly took her number one singles match to a third set before falling 6-2, 7-5 to Borza who is the all-time winningist women's tennis player at the University of Pittsburgh as a junior.
The women's team will return to the court with a home match against Division II Mercyhurst College on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m.
