#1 Generals Top #7 Tartans in Regional Final
May 4 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Tartans and Generals faced in October with the #1 Generals taking a 5-4 victory back to Lexington, Virginia and the visitors did much of the same winning the South Atlantic Regional 5-2, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. Washington & Lee advances to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship which will be hosted by Gustavus Adolphus May 13-18.
Washington & Lee took a 2-1 doubles lead after victories at #1 and #3 by Lauren Caire/Katie Tabb (8-5) and Virginia Dickinson/Kelly Will (8-3). The Tartans number two doubles pair iuof freshmen Kelly Hart (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Joaquin) and Ashley Herrick (Amherst, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) kept the host team in the match early with a 9-7 win.
Senior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) won her number one singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Katie Tabb to tie the overall score at 2-2 before the Generals regained the lead 4-2. Caire defeated Hart at number three singles (6-0, 6-0) and Meg Spalitta topped freshman Danielle Rosenfeld (Gladwyne, Pa./Harriton) 6-1, 6-1 at number six singles for the two-point advantage.
Washington & Lee's Will earned the fifth and final point of the match at number two singles over freshman Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista). Will battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win 7-6 (7-2) and followed with a 6-1 win to end the match.
The Tartans finish the year at 18-8 with a national ranking of seven and their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
