Women’s Tennis Advances to Round of 16

May 3 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s tennis team competed in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships Saturday, May 3. The Tartans advanced to the finals of the Regional with a 5-0 victory over Ithaca College. The three day regional is hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. The win moves the Tartans dual record to 18-7, as the Bombers end their season at 13-6.

Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) and freshman
Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) won eight straight games to claim an 8-1 victory over Alyssa Jaffee and Agata Kubik of Ithaca. At second doubles, freshmen
Ashley Herrick (Amherst, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and junior
Kelly Nakamura (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Punahou) won 8-1 over Melanie Cohen and Melissa Nunez, as did the duo of sophomore
Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and freshman
Danielle Rosenfeld (Gladwyne, Pa./Harriton) at third doubles. Liebowitz and Rosenfeld defeated Sarah Hollis and Lindsey Johnston.
The Tartans finished the match with two straight set victories at first and third singles. Staloch claimed a 6-2, 6-0 over Cohen, while Liebowitz won 6-3, 6-1 against Jafee.
Carnegie Mellon will face the winner of Washington & Lee / Hunter College Sunday, May 4 in the Atlantic South Regional final at noon.
