Women’s Tennis Ranked Nationally
Nov. 13 – (SKILLMAN, N.J.) – The first national Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings came out with Carnegie Mellon University’s women’s team making their highest appearance ever at 5th out of 25. The team is also receiving an Atlantic South regional ranking of 3rd with three singles players and two doubles pairs earning recognition.
This marks the fourth straight year the women’s team has been featured in the national rankings as they finished 19th in the nation last season but not before they were ranked as high as 11th during the season.
The Tartans have started the 2007-08 year with a 1-2 dual match record, with the losses to Division II California University of Pennsylvania (sixth nationally) and #1 Washington & Lee University.
Senior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) continues to leave marks on the program as she sits 6th in the region for singles play. She won four matches at the ITA Regional event before falling in the semifinals. Freshman Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) makes her first career appearance in the rankings at 14th. Chui made it to the quarterfinals of ITA Regionals before falling to Staloch. Freshman Brooke Loar (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also makes the individual top 25 with a marking of 21.
In doubles action, Staloch pairs with Chui as the number one doubles team in the region. The pair won the ITA Regional Championship and finished fifth at the national tournament. The freshmen combo of Kelly Hart (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Joaquin) and Ashley Herrick (Amherst, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) are 13th in the region and have a 4-1 record this season including a win against W&L’s number two team.
There are currently four teams on the women’s schedule that are ranked in the nation and the season resumes on Saturday, February 2 with an indoor match at Division II Slippery Rock University.
