Women’s Tennis Concludes Annual Invitational; Herrick Honored by UAA

Sept. 11 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s tennis team opened up their 2007 season this past weekend hosting their annual invitational. The invitational featured three Division I programs, University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Robert Morris University, as well as the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon came away with two doubled champions in their flights and a second and two third place finishes in singles play.
The highlight of the invitational for the Tartans was when the tandem of senior
Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) and freshman
Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) defeated the number one doubles team from the University of Pittsburgh, Kristy Borza and Sabrina Visram, 8-6 to win flight #1 in doubles play. Carnegie Mellon had one other doubles team victorious, as the duo of senior
Samantha Shultz (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore
Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) defeated Robert Morris’ number one doubles team of Kali Delorie and Libby Shaw 8-2 in the doubles third flight bracket.
Tartan freshman
Ashley Herrick (Cleveland, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) placed second in flight three of singles. In her opening round she defeated Lanna Buehler of Robert Morris, 7-5, 6-0. Herrick then advanced to the semifinals where she won 6-4, 7-6 (4) over Shannon Benic from the University of Pittsburgh before dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Stephanie Scheinoff of Pitt.
Staloch was a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 winner in the first round on flight one singles before dropping a 6-0, 6-3 match in the semifinals to Elizabeth Adams. Staloch fought here way back to place third after defeating Rachel McGowan of Duquesne 8-6.
Freshman
Brooke Loar (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was also a third place finisher as she won 8-3 over Duquesne’s Rebecca Poole. Loar competed in flight two in singles play. In her first collegiate match she upended Pitt’s Christie D’Achille 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. Before defeating Poole she fell to Duquesne’s Zena Williams, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Herrick was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for her performance throughout the invitational.
