Two Carnegie Mellon Women Tennis Players Receive NCAA Invite
May 2 - (INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – A day after the Carnegie Mellon women's tennis team received their third straight invitation to the NCAA Division III Championships, the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Committee selected two Tartan athletes to compete as an individual and a doubles team at the championships. Junior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) and senior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) will represent Carnegie Mellon at the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships.
Staloch was invited to her third straight NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship as a singles player and is joined by Iyer as a doubles tandem. This also marks the third straight year that the duo has made the championships as a doubles team. In 2006, Staloch and Iyer fell in the national semifinals to Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen of Gustavus Adolphus, the eventual national champions. Iyer combines with Staloch for a 20-10 doubles record and a third place finish at the ITA Championships in the fall.
Staloch will enter singles play as the eighth seed. In 2005, Staloch bowed in the national semifinals and lost in the round of sixteen a year ago. She has a singles record of 22-9 and was named the University Athletic Association Women’s Tennis Player of the Year.
The individual championships include 32 single players and 16 double teams. The singles and doubles championships will be held May 18-20 at the University of Mary Washington Battleground Complex hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
