Close Match Favors Opponent in Women's Tennis

Mar. 31 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - In another close match for the Carnegie Mellon women's tennis team, the Tartans fell one match short in a 5-4 loss to visiting University of Mary Washington (UMW). The Tartans, ranked 13th, move to an even 7-7 on the year, while #10 UMW improves to 10-2.

Senior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and junior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) both swept in their outings combining for a 8-4 victory at number one doubles and winning their respective singles matches. Staloch finished first in singles action, putting away Stephanie Kurti by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Iyer won her number two match 6-3, 6-3 over Becky Morse-Karzen.

Freshman Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) battled to a three set win, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to give the Tartans their fourth point in the final match of the day.

Freshman Andrea Meythaler (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had a strong performance despite falling 6-0 in the third set as she batted to win the second set 6-3 after falling in the first 6-3.

The Tartans will continue play with a road match at #28 Kenyon College on Sunday, April 1.
