Women's Tennis Starts Dual Meet Action with 9-0 Win at Grove City

Sept. 19 - (GROVE CITY, Pa.) - After beginning the season with a home invitational against members of the Duquesne University, Robert Morris University and University of Pittsburgh squads, Carnegie Mellon returned to Division III action with their first dual meet against Grove City College on the road. The Tartans took a 9-0 win over last year's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion and 19-time defending title winner.

Senior Mai Otsuka (Gifu, Japan/Kimball Union Academy) and number three doubles partner sophomore Claire Weiss (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) started off the day with a 8-1 win before the All-America doubles team of senior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and junior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) won their match 8-2. Freshmen combo Andrea Meythaler (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) and Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) then gave the Tartans a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 win.

Liebowitz and Meythaler won their respective singles matches by 6-1, 6-0 scores, as Staloch, Weiss and Otsuka each blanked their opponent in one set. Iyer defeated last year's PAC champion Kristin McNally at number two singles 6-1, 6-1.

The women's tennis team will break for individual competition for the ITA Regionals to be held at the University of Mary Washington September 23-25.
