Tartans Drop Match to Ranked Opponent

Mar. 29 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - In their fifth match against a ranked opponent this month, the #10 Tartans of Carnegie Mellon dropped a match, 6-3, to #13 Denison University in what came down to the last two singles games to determine the winner. Carnegie Mellon is now 7-6 on the year and Denison moves to 7-3.

Denison started with a 2-1 lead after doubles completion. The number one team of senior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and junior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow) put the Tartans on the board with an 8-1 win.

Freshman Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made the score 3-2, with Denison still holding the lead, with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Whitney Block at number four singles.

Iyer than left things open for the Tartans to earn the victory pulling the team within one at 4-3. Iyer defeated Marta Drane at number two singles 7-6(6), 6-1 leaving each team to wait for the results of number one and five singles.

Junior Samantha Shultz (Okemos, Mich.) lost a tough battle in three sets in the five slot which secured the victory for the visiting Big Red. Schultz's score was 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Although the match had been decided, Staloch was left to finish on court one. After dropping the first set 3-6, she won the second 6-1 before falling 5-7 in the decisive third.

The women continue their treacherous schedule with a home match against #11 University of Mary Washington on Saturday, March 31. The match is set to start at 10:00 a.m. at the Carnegie Mellon Tennis Courts.
