Women’s Tennis Player Staloch Named MVP of UAA; Five Others Named All-UAA

Apr. 30 - (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University junior Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) was named Women’s Tennis Most Valuable Player of the University Athletic Association (UAA) by the tennis coaches of the association, as announced Monday, April 30. This marks the second straight year that she was awarded the honor and she is joined by five other teammates on the All-UAA Teams.

Staloch had a regular season overall record of 22-9 in singles and 20-10 in doubles play. She ended the season with seven straight victories at singles including three at the UAA Championships. Staloch and senior teammate Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) earned second team All-UAA honors at first doubles. The tandem went 20-10 and became All-Americans in the fall after placing third at the ITA National Small College Championships.

Junior Samantha Schultz (Okemos, Mich.) received first team accolades at fifth singles. Schultz compiled a 13-4 record in singles play with a 3-0 mark in the UAA. She has won her last six matches including a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Division II opponent West Liberty State College.

Finding a spot on the second team was senior Mai Otsuka (Gifu, Japan/Kimball Union Academy). Mai received the honor for sixth singles. She finished the season 7-7 and won two of her three matches at the championships. Carnegie Mellon had two other players named to the All-UAA Second Team, the freshmen duo of Alisa Liebowitz (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Peggy Stankevich (East Hampton, N.Y./Ross School) at third doubles. The pair had a mark of 5-2 and went 2-1 at the UAA Championships in doubles action.

The Tartans finished second in the UAA for the second straight season and compiled an overall team record of 12-8. They are currently ranked 18th in Division III and six of their losses have been against nationally ranked opponents.
