Carnegie Mellon’s Women’s Tennis Team Receives NCAA Invite
May 2 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon’s women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA Tournament as announced late Monday, May 1 by the NCAA Division III tennis committee. This marks the second straight appearance for the women after making the field last year for the first time in school history.
The 12th-ranked women's team travels to Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, for the Atlantic South Regional on Saturday-Sunday, May 6-7. The Tartans (15-6) take on 18th-ranked Swarthmore (16-2) on Saturday, while 1st-ranked Washington & Lee (24-0) hosts 21st-ranked Mary Washington (15-8) in the other first-round match-up. The winners meet Sunday with a chance to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals which will be played Wednesday, May 17 at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Selected for the NCAA individual championships were sophomore Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich/H. H. Dow) in singles and the pairing of Staloch and junior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) in doubles. Earlier this season, Staloch was crowned the ITA National Small College National Champion. In winning the National title she became the first women's singles player in school history to win the National Small College Championship. She finished the regular season with an overall record of 21-12 in singles play. Staloch and Iyer will enter the NCAA’s with a 17-2 mark in doubles action
Match times will be determined by the host sites and will be announced later this week.
