#14 Tartans End Johns Hopkins Win Streak With 8-1 Victory

Apr. 16 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon hosted Johns Hopkins in women's tennis action on Sunday, April 16 and finished the weekend with their second victory by an 8-1 score. The Tartans started the day sweeping the doubles action and clinched the win with victories at number two and number four singles. Carnegie Mellon jumps to 13-5 on the year, while the Blue Jays fall to 11-3.

Senior Alison Liu (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and freshman Kelly Nakamura (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Punahou) played the number two doubles slot in the absence of freshman Sheena David (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) and won 8-2 over Becky Busch and Stephanie Carr. Junior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and sophomore Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H.Dow) won their number one doubles match by an 8-4 score before sophomore Samantha Schultz (Okemos, Mich.) teamed up with freshman Claire Weiss (Hamden, Conn.) to complete the sweep with an 8-5 score at number three doubles.

Staloch earned the first win in singles action at the number one spot over Brittany Matava 6-4, 7-5. Staloch went up 2-1 in the first set before Matava fought to win two straight games and retake the lead. After a split on serves, Staloch won twice and then finished off the set for the 6-4 win. Again Staloch went up 2-1 before dropping to 2-3. However, she regained the lead on the next exchange and battled it out for the 7-5 win and the match victory.

Nakamura, Iyer and Liu all won in straight sets to six points. Nakamura defeated Busch by a 6-4, 6-2 score at number four singles. Iyer quickly downed Gulnik 6-2, 6-1 in the number two spot and Liu finished off Seidman 6-4, 6-0 at number three. Schultz was the last to finish for the Tartans pulling off a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Next up for the nationally ranked Tartans is the University Athletic Association Tournament hosted by Emory University. The tournament will begin Friday, April 21 and end on Sunday, April 23. Seedings for the tournament will be known on Wednesday, April 19.
