Iyer Receives 2006 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Collegiate Regional Award
May 12 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University junior women’s tennis player Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) received the 2006 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Collegiate Regional Award for the Atlantic South Region. The award honors a player’s leadership and sportsmanship on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, you must be a junior or senior who has been enrolled at the school for one full year prior to the present school year. Only one person per team may be recommended for the award by his/her coach.
Iyer earned first team All-UAA honors at first doubles after recording an 18-3 overall mark teaming up with sophomore Amy Staloch. The tandem has won ten out of their last 11 matches with wins over Division I Pittsburgh, Division II Mercyhurst and the top ranked team in Division III, Emory. She will compete for the national doubles championship with Staloch during the up coming week.
Iyer will now be on a ballet with three others to receive the National Award.
