Women’s Tennis Has Strong First Day At ITA Regionals

Sept. 24 - (FREDERICKSBURG, VA.) – Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team opened up the first day of ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on a good note. The Tartans had three players advance to the field of 16 in singles play and their number one doubles team advance to the quarterfinals.

Setting the tone high for the Tartans was their #1 singles player, sophomore Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H. H. Dow), seed number one, as she defeated her opponents 6-0, 6-0, and 6-3, 6-2. The Hawaii freshmen, Sheena David (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) and Kelly Nakamura (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Punahou), both advanced as well to the field of 16 in singles competition. David, the number nine seed, advanced on wins of 6-4, 6-1, and 6-1, 7-5. Unseeded Nakamura won her first match 6-0, 6-2 before upsetting the twelfth seed 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second day of play.

In doubles action the team of Staloch and David, who are seeded second, advanced to the quarterfinals. Their scores were 8-6 and 9-7.
