Staloch Named MVP of UAA; Four Others Named All-UAA and Coaching Staff Honored

May 1 - (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Amy Staloch (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) was named Women’s Tennis’ Most Valuable Player of the University Athletic Association (UAA) by the tennis coaches of the Association, as announced Monday, May 1. Staloch was joined by four other teammates on the All-UAA Teams. Head Coach Andrew Girard and his staff were honored as Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the second consecutive season the women’s coaching staff has received the honor.

Earlier this season, Staloch was crowned the ITA National Small College National Champion. In winning the National title she became the first women's singles player in school history to win the National Small College Championship. She finished the regular season with an overall record of 21-12 in singles and 24-4 in doubles play.

Staloch and junior Mona Iyer (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) earned first team All-UAA honors at first doubles after recording a 17-2 overall mark and a 3-0 record last weekend at the UAA Championships. The tandem has won nine straight matches with wins over Division I Pittsburgh, Division II Mercyhurst and the top ranked team in Division III, Emory.

Carnegie Mellon had two other players named to the All-UAA First Team, senior Alison Liu (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and freshman Kelly Nakamura (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Punahou) at number three doubles. The duo had a mark of 14-3 and went undefeated at the UAA Championships in doubles action, including a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Emory University’s third doubles team.

Sophomore Samantha Schultz (Okemos, Mich.) rounded out the honors for Carnegie Mellon, as she was named Second Team All-UAA at six singles. Schultz compiled a 16-13 record in singles play with a 2-1 mark in the UAA. She has won five of her last six matches including a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Division II opponent Mercyhurst College.

The Tartans finished second in the UAA and compiled an overall team record of 15-6. They are currently ranked 14th in Division III and five of their six losses have come at the hands of higher nationally ranked opponents.
