Tartan Women Win Three at Quad Meet

Nov. 17 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – A strong overall performance by the women’s swimming & diving team of Carnegie Mellon University pushed them to three wins during their quad meet with Franklin & Marshall (153-109), University of Rochester (178-84) and Washington & Lee (167-95) at home Saturday afternoon. The team won seven events and placed second in five.

Senior Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J.) swept the sprint freestyles with times of 25.16 in the 50-yard free and a season-best time of 54.54 in the 100-yard free. Taking three first places was freshman Molly Evans (Butler, Pa.). She improved her times in the 100-yard backstroke (58.55) and 200-yard IM (2:11.22), both new school records and NCAA “B” cut times, and also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.40).

The 200-yard medley relay team of Evans, sophomore Sara Andrews (Washington, Pa./Trinity), freshman Lauren Gumbel (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and Connell opened the meet with a win in a time of 1:52.14 and the 400-yard freestyle relay team (Andrews, freshman Brianne Burton (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central), junior Allison Retotar (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Connell) closed the meet with a win in 3:43.11.

Recording important second place finishes were Retotar in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02), Andrews in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.11), senior Anna Kochalko (Encinitas, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.97) and 200-yard butterfly (2:15.71), and freshman Rebecca Ussai (Cleveland, Ohio/Beaumont) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.53).

In the diving meet versus Rochester, the Tartans took both first and second places in the 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Junior Charlotte Jennings (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) won both finishing ahead of junior teammate Alex DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

The Tartans take a weekend off before they travel to Gambier, Ohio for the Nike Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Thursday, November 29 – Saturday, December 1. The diving team will travel to Miami University of Ohio for a meet the same weekend.
