Women’s Swimming and Diving Defeat Grove City

Nov. 10 – (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Grove City College Saturday, November 10 and came away with a 180-133 victory over the Wolverines. The dual win evens their record at 1-1 on the young season.
The Tartans had a strong showing in the 1000-yard freestyle, as they swept the event. Freshman
Noelle Helmstetter (Clinton Twp., N.J./The Peddie School) placed first touching the wall in 11:18.53 followed by senior
Xiao-Lan Wong (Edison, N.J./John P Stevens) and junior
Tina Daup (Eagan, Minn.) with times of 11:29.00 and 11:32.30, respectively.
Freshman
Molly Evans (Butler, Pa.) had yet another impressive meet placing first in the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle. Evans won the 100 back with a time of 58.58 finishing over six seconds ahead of the second place finisher. She touched the wall in a time of 5:09.66 well ahead of second place.
Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J./Hasbrouck Hts.) won the 100 freestyle (:55.22) and senior
Alex Kinzler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum/American Univ.) won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.42
Junior diver
Charlotte Jennings (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) won the won the one-meter diving event with 207.10 points and junior
Alex DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) placed second recording 205.10 points. In the three-meter event it was DeFazio edging Jennings 207.70 to 201.75.
The team will return to the pool on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 as they host a quad meet with Franklin & Marshall, Washington & Lee and the University of Rochester. Diving will start the meet on Friday with swimming events to take place at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
