Women’s Swimming Defeats Case Western 120-85

Jan. 12 – (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – Carnegie Mellon University's swim team returned to the pool Saturday afternoon at Case Western Reserve University following a week long training trip to Florida. The women's team won eight events finishing off the Spartans 120-85 to win their fifth dual meet of the year.

Freshman Molly Evans (Butler, Pa.) won two events and was part of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay team that touched the wall .40 seconds ahead of Case Western. Joining Evans on the relay team were senior Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J.), junior Allison Retotar (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills) and freshman Brianne Burton (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central). Evans’ other wins came in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.27) and 1,000-yard freestyle where she set her fourth individual school record this year with a time of 10:32.23.

The Tartans opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay behind a 1:56.15 performance by junior Colleen Murphy (Aberdeen, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), sophomore Sara Andrews (Washington, Pa./Trinity), freshman Lauren Gumbel (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and Connell.

Retotar took home the 200-yard freestyle win with a time of 2:00.83 while senior Anna Kochalko (Encinitas, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) won the 400-yard IM by eight seconds in a time of 4:50.77.

Freshman Rebecca Ussai (Cleveland, Ohio/Beaumont) was the 100-yard butterfly champion with a time of 1:01.33 and Connell won her third event of the day in the 100-yard freestyle touching the wall in 53.91.

The Tartans will host their final dual meet of the year on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m. when Allegheny College comes to the Carnegie Mellon campus.
