Swimming and Diving Teams Conclude Annual Invite

Nov. 5 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted their annual two-day invitational with Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, and Case Western Reserve University Saturday and Sunday, November 4-5. The women’s team finished second, while the men placed third.
There were three National Qualifying B cuts achieved by Tartan swimmers this weekend. With a time of 1:07.72 in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 2:26.08 in the 200 breaststroke event junior Alex Kinzler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum/American Univ.) received two of the B cuts. Dave Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) achieved the third B cut in the 100 Butterfly event posting at time of 51.19.
“This was a good weekend for both teams, which will lead to great things for the rest of the season,” commented Coach David Belowich.
The men’s team had strong swims throughout the meet including a number of personal bests. Sophomore Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood) had personal best times in the 100 (54.61) backstroke, 200 (1:47.21) freestyle and 100 freestyle (48:17) events. Freshman Reece Dukes (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) swam very well overall in the 100 (53.92) and 200 (1:57.74) backstroke events as well as the 200 freestyle and 200 IM (2:01.00) events. Freshmen divers Matt Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Joe Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity) dove strong this weekend and placed 1st and 2nd respectively in both events.
The women’s team also had a number of personal best performes this weekend. Junior Xiao-Lan Wong (Edison, N.J./John P Stevens) had a great meet with seasonal bests in all of her individual events, 1650 freestyle (19:04.72), 200 butterfly and 500 (5:36.63) freestyle. Freshman Sara Andrews (Washington, Pa./Trinity) also swam personal bests in the 50 (26.12) and 100 freestyle events this weekend. Divers Charlotte Jennings (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) and Alex DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) also had strong showings this weekend, placing 1st and 2nd respectively in both of their events.
Next Saturday, November 11 the Tartans will host Grove City College. The meet will start at 1:00 p.m.
