In our last burning questions segment Sarah DeWath said that you have “your own interesting style (of dancing) before games.” Where did you learn to dance as “well” as you do, and are there particular songs that you like to dance to?
LS: Hahahha. I think Sarah made that comment because it is a tradition that I break dance before each game to N’Sync’s Merry Christmas song. Basically I think everyone just realizes my style of dance is beyond them... they can ’t keep up with my moves!
Coach Sue and you seem to talk about cooking quite a bit since both of you are active in the kitchen. If we were to hold a cooking contest who would come out of it victorious, and why?
LS: I would DEFINITELY come out victorious. I’ve tasted her cooking before, and I’ll admit it is very good. However, she needs to take notes from the master. Hahaha. I love cooking and Coach Sue and I always swap recipes. It’s fun.
You are one of two players on the team who are from the Pittsburgh area, so how long did you know that CMU was the school for you. What set us apart from the other schools on your list?
LS: I knew for a long time that CMU was the school for me. It’s close to home, it’s challenging, it has a great athletic D-III program, and it has a wonderful business program that is nationally known.
Your brother James was a standout soccer player on the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team prior to your arrival on campus. What is it like playing soccer for the same university, and how has he influenced your soccer career?
LS: I wish my brother didn’t graduate so we could play soccer and travel together! He has really influenced my soccer career a lot. A funny story is when I was little, he used to take me out in the backyard and stand about 10 feet away and kick soccer balls at me as hard as he could. I would start to cry and he would say there’s no crying in soccer! I had to stand there and take the hits! But it actually made me tough …hahaha.
Ever since your freshman year you have been a student worker in our admissions department in numerous roles including that of a tour guide. What is the funniest question someone has asked on a tour, and what is your favorite place to show people?
LS: My funniest question was probably, “Are the actual classrooms in Baker Hall sloping like the floors? Will your pencil roll off the desk?” I definitely got a kick out of that one. My favorite place to show people is our brand new field in Gesling Stadium because it is gorgeous!
The Tepper School of Business, which you are a student in, was recently named the fifth best undergraduate business school nationally by the U.S News and World Report. What is it like to be a student in such a highly regarded and competitive school? You have also achieved great success in the classroom, has it been hard to manage your academic and athletic demands?
LS: I love being a part of such a competitive school. I am incredibly blessed to be here. I feel that my grades are actually better when I am in season for soccer! Somehow I manage my time better knowing that I have to get stuff done.
For the past few months the team has been in their off season. What has the team done during this time to prepare themselves for next season, and what is the morale like on the team going into your spring practice season?
LS: The morale has been amazing. We have been lifting 2-3 times a week and playing pick-up. Now that spring season is here, we are prepared to go to the next level. We are all a lot stronger physically than last year as well.
In NCAA division III academics are supposed to be a college students priority, so taking soccer completely out of the equation why should a prospective student-athlete choose to come to CMU?
LS: The school itself is world-renowned. Your classmates are Valedictorians from all over the world. It is truly amazing the potential of everyone and the diversity that everyone brings. Not only that, but there is a world of opportunity at CMU.
During the men’s and women’s basketball games last month there was an 80s theme night which awarded prizes for the best 80s costumes. You were awarded second place, and your teammate Amanda Rose was awarded first place. What inspired your award winning attire, and do you really think Rose’s costume was better?
LS: I figured that if I was going to dress up, I might as well go all out!! What is really sad is that I didn’t even buy a costume…..those were clothes I actually wear! Hahahaha. Rose’s costume was pretty ridiculous. I think she deserved first place.
In many of our past burning questions segments we have discussed the NFL. You and Abby Coffin are the only Pittsburgh natives on the team, so which one of you is the bigger Steelers fan. Also, how do you think the team will do next season under a new coach?
LS: I would say that I am the bigger Steelers fan, however, Abby is a lot bigger and stronger than me and I fear she would literally hurt me if I said I was a bigger fan. So I’m going to go with Abby on this one. In my opinion, Bill Cowher should have retired when they won the Super Bowl. Last season was such a disappointment that the team has nothing to lose and nowhere to go but up with the new coach.
CMU plays a very competitive schedule against some of the best teams in the country. What’s been the most memorable game or win you’ve been a part of?
LS: My freshman year when we played Chicago. That was by far my most memorable game. It was our first UAA game of the year and the most passion I’ve ever seen a team play with before. I will forever remember that win.
What are going to do after you graduate?
LS: I plan to get a job somewhere. I love the New England area a lot. Then I want to get married, have 3 kids, and a dog named Yinzer.
