Sept. 26 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – After waiting through an hour and 45 minute weather delay, the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team wasted little time putting the ball in the net. The Tartans burst out of the gate to take an early two goal lead en route to defeating the visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents 6-0.
The Tartans struck early and often as junior forward
Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) one-timed a cross from senior forward
Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) past Presidents junior goalkeeper Jackie Foltz. Stever’s cross came from the left corner after she received a pass from senior midfielder
Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West).
Coffin notched her second goal of the game in the 17th minute when she played a ball from sophomore defender Casey Garth (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and found herself with only the keeper to beat. Coffin blasted a shot into the left corner of the goal for her fifth goal of the season.
Freshman forward
Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) utilized her speed in the 43rd minute, dribbling past a defender and then past Foltz upon which Corvino kicked it into the empty net for her third goal of the season.
Coffin registered her first hat trick of the season and the third of her career in the 56th minute when she headed in Rose’s corner kick.
Coffin set a school record with her fourth goal of the game in the 58th minute when she received a through pass from Rose and, with only Foltz to beat, dribbled around her and booted the ball into the net.
Corvino chipped the ball over Foltz in the 66th minute and into the net for her second goal of the game.
Tartans freshmen goalkeepers
Anya Rosen (La Canada, Calif.) and
