Stats

Oct. 26 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon’s women soccer team strung together an impressive performance on Friday, October 26 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play as they defeated the New York University Violets 5-1 at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans improve to 8-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the UAA while NYU drops to 10-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the UAA.

Freshman forward Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) used her wheels to put the Tartans ahead in the 23rd minute of the game. On a breakaway, Corvino got by the Violets defense and with only the goalkeeper to beat, kicked the ball into the left corner of the net.

NYU answered with an equalizer in the 42nd minute when NYU sophomore Sarah Lensing scored off a long ball from freshman Katie Gaston. Lensing received the ball at the top of the box and her shot in traffic found its way past Tartan freshman goalie Anya Rosen (La Cañada, Calif.).

The Tartans replied, taking the lead moments before halftime. Senior Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) received a cross from the right side by Eleonore Valencia (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and laced a shot from 15 yards out into the right corner of the goal.

Stever added an insurance goal in the 55th minute when she one-timed a free kick from senior midfielder Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo.) into the net to make it 3-1 Carnegie Mellon.

Rose increased the Tartan lead in the 60th minute when her free kick from 45 yards out bounced once and into the net for her fourth goal of the season. Senior midfielder Jess Howard (Brookline, Mass.) added a late goal in the 75th minute when her shot was deflected by Violets junior goalkeeper Rebekah Kramer and Howard was able to tap the ball into the empty net. Freshman midfielder Adrienne Pajer (Southbury, Conn./Miss Porter’s) assisted on the goal.

The Tartans took 15 shots in the game while NYU attempted four. Rosen stopped one shot while Barnes made two saves and Kramer collected one for NYU.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will be in action again on Sunday, October 28 when they play their final regular season home game. They host UAA opponent Brandeis University in what is scheduled to be a 1:30 p.m. start at Gesling Stadium.
