Stats

Sept. 1 – (BALTIMORE, Md.) – In a battle with Johns Hopkins University, the women's soccer team of Carnegie Mellon University came up short in a 2-1 loss in each team's season opener. The Tartans got on the board first but a 1-0 halftime lead didn't hold up.

"We had a great team effort today and scored first on a great goal, but we came up short against a very good team," commented Head Coach Sue Willard.

Senior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) received a cross from freshman Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) in the 39th minute which she put away just inside the post to give the Tartans the lead.

The lead stood until the 70th minute when Johns Hopkins' Molly Steele equalized with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Claire Pelura scored the game winner just under 10 minutes later with a hard shot from the left side to beat junior goalkeeper Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) to the far post. Adams made five saves in goal for the Tartans.

"I'm proud of the effort our girls displayed and we'll use the experience for the rest of the season," added Willard.

The Tartans continue play on Sunday, September 2 against Guilford College out of North Carolina at 1:00 p.m. in the Johns Hopkins Tournament.
