Women’s Soccer Defeats Guilford 4-1

Stats

Sept. 2 - (BALTIMORE, Md.) - The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer competed at the second day of the Donna K. Lane / Johns Hopkins University Invitational Sunday, September 2.  Two goals off the foot of freshman Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) lifted the Tartans to a 4-1 victory.  The Tartans move to 1-1 on the young season, as the Quakers drop to 0-2.

After a 2-1 setback yesterday against a tough Johns Hopkins team, the Tartans fired back on Sunday to get their first win in 2007.  Senior Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) added to her career school record after tallying three assists.  Rose now has 27 in her career.

Carnegie Mellon wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as junior forward Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) netted her first goal of the season.  Coffin took a pass from senior Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) and found the back of the net at the 2:39 mark in the first half. Just under nine minutes later senior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) gave the Tartans a 2-0 lead off a corner kick by Rose, as that was the first of three assists for Rose on the afternoon.

Guilford’s Amanda Sperr cut the Tartans lead in half in the 36th minute when she fired a shot from the top of the box past junior keeper Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy).  The Tartans continued their solid play in the second half as Corvino tacked on two insurance goals for the Tartans.  Both of her goals were assisted by Rose with the first coming in the 58th minute and the second in the 83rd.

Adams finished the game with one save, as the Tartans out shot the Quakers 14-4.

“After a tough loss to Johns Hopkins it was nice to get our first win under our belts,” commented Head Coach Sue Willard.  “We faced adversity throughout the game and made the necessary adjustments to come away with the victory.”

The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 8 as they play Kenyon in the first day of the Otterbein Tournament.  Start time is set for noon.
