DeWath, Rosen Lead Women’s Soccer Past #7 Denison

Stats

Sept. 22 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Junior defender Sarah DeWath (Cuppertino, Calif./Monta Vista) scored the only goal and freshman goalkeeper Anya Rosen (La Cañada, Calif.) preserved the shutout in a 1-0 win for the Carnegie Mellon University women’s soccer team over #7 Denison University on Saturday, September 22. The Tartans improve to 4-3 on the year, while Denison drops to 7-2.

DeWath’s second career goal came with a minute before the half when she headed home what proved to be the game-winner. DeWath charged through the six-yard box to meet senior midfielder Amanda Rose’s (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) corner kick and placed it inside the near post past Denison senior keeper Liz Gillette.

In her second start of the year, Rosen made two incredible saves jumping to punch away a shot by Denison’s Sarah Ash at the 67:12 mark and followed that with a leaping save to her left to stop Eliza Miller’s shot attempt under four minutes later.

The back line of DeWath, sophomore Casey Garth (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), junior Mary Ashe (Rockville, Md./Wootton) and freshman Emily Overstreet (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) helped keep the Denison attack at bay.

Senior forward Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) challenged Gillette twice with headers in the 20th and 21st minutes that Gillette was able to gather in. Freshman midfielder Kate Smith (E. Greenwich, R.I./LaSalle Academy) also put two shots on goal as she helped control the midfield for the Tartans.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will be in action again on Wednesday, September 26 when they host the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Gesling Stadium.
