Women’s Soccer Defeats Maroons Thanks To Coffin’s Hat Trick

Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) provided the scoring and the Carnegie Mellon University women’s soccer team registered their first University Athletic Association (UAA) win by defeating the visiting University of Chicago Maroons 3-1 Saturday afternoon. Carnegie Mellon held a 1-0 lead throughout much of the game before a flurry of goals occurred late. The Tartans improve to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the UAA while Chicago falls to 6-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the UAA.
Coffin headed in the game’s first goal in the 24th minute. Senior midfielder Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) took a free kick from the right side of the field and crossed the ball into the penalty box. Coffin’s head met the ball and sent it sailing just over the head of Chicago senior goalkeeper Amanda Sutter and just under the crossbar.
Coffin added an insurance that proved important in the 84th minute. Rose took a free kick from midfield after a Chicago hand ball. The ball got by Sutter and Coffin was there to tap the ball into the empty net.
Chicago answered 83 seconds later with their first goal of the game as sophomore midfielder Claire Gill one-touched a long cross from junior midfielder Siggy Nachtergaele past Tartan freshman goalkeeper Anya Rosen (La Cañada, Calif.).
Coffin struck again in the 89th minute, registering the hat trick as she headed a cross from senior midfielder Jess Howard (Brookline, Mass.) past Sutter and into the low far corner of the goal. Coffin now has ten goals on the season and four hat tricks in her career.
Rosen made two saves while Sutter registered one save in the loss. The Tartans managed eight shots in the game compared to Chicago’s five.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will be on the road this upcoming weekend as they will travel to play the University of Rochester on Friday, October 12 with game time scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
