Tartans Win Possession Game Against Case Western
Oct. 14 – (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – A second half surge and late goal by the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team propelled them to a 1-0 win over University Athletic Association (UAA) foe, Case Western Reserve University, on Sunday afternoon. The Tartans are now 7-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the UAA, while the Spartans sit 6-8 and 0-4 in the league.
Freshman goalie Anya Rosen (La Canada, Calif.) recorded her fourth shutout of the year making three saves in the game, but two in the first half keeping the game alive for the Tartans. One of her saves came at the 4:20 mark and the second off a header from a corner kick in the 35th minute.
The Tartans only shot of the first half, by junior Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) was saved by Kirsten McClain at the 13:46 mark.
Carnegie Mellon came out of the locker room fired up and put pressure on the Spartans defense early with shots by senior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and freshman forward Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) but both were saved by McClain. Stever would eventually find the back of the net off an assist by Corvino in the 69th minute, when Corvino dribble past the keeper slipping a pass to Stever to lay it in the open net.
Rosen's biggest save of the game came with 34 seconds to go when she stopped a header by Caroline Garber negating the Spartans only threat to score in the half. For the game, the Tartans had seven shots, with five on goal including one by freshman Adrienne Pajer (Southbury, Conn./Miss Porter's) with under five minutes to play. Case put three of their five shots on net.
The Tartans will use a much needed two weeks off to prepare for New York University on Friday, October 26. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
