Women’s Soccer Falls to Brandeis 2-1

Oct. 28 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – An early lead didn’t stand for the Carnegie Mellon University women’s soccer team on Sunday, October 28 as the visiting Brandeis University Judges came away with a 2-1 victory. The loss drops Carnegie Mellon’s record to 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Brandeis improves to 9-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the UAA.
The Tartan seniors stepped up on senior day, combining for the first goal of the game in the 40th minute. Senior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) one-touched a low shot toward the far post past Brandeis sophomore goalkeeper Hillary Rosenzweig. Senior midfielder Jess Howard (Brookline, Mass.) assisted on the goal as she passed the ball over the top to Stever.
The Tartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Brandeis netted the equalizer in the 62nd minute. Junior midfielder Jenna Lipawsky received an attempted Carnegie Mellon clearance at the top of the box and booted a shot that sailed into the top right corner of the goal.
Nearing the end of regulation the game stayed deadlocked at one before Brandeis punched in the game-winner. Senior midfielder Tzlil Castel received a long pass and blasted a shot over Carnegie Mellon freshman goalie Anya Rosen (La Cañada, Calif.) into the net from 15 yards away.
The Tartans put pressure up front in the waning minutes of the game, trying to tie the game to no avail. Each team took ten shots on the day, with Rosenzweig making four saves and Rosen collecting three.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s team will play their final regular season game on Saturday, November 3 against Emory University in Atlanta. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
