Women’s Soccer Tames Lions 4-0

Sept. 17 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team put forth a strong effort from start to finish on Monday, September 17 en route to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Penn State Behrend Lions at Gesling Stadium. The win evens the Tartans’ record to 3-3 and Penn State Behrend drops to 1-4-2.
Senior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and senior midfielder Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) provided all the scoring for the Tartans as each netted two goals on the evening. Stever started the scoring in the 17th minute when she collected a throw in from senior midfielder Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) and shot from the right side of the six-yard box past Lions goalkeeper Kayla Frost and inside the near post.
Rose got in the scoring column at the 38 minute mark when her penalty kick sailed into the top left corner of the goal past Frost’s outstretched hands. The penalty kick was set up after freshman forward Valerie Corvino (New York, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) was fouled inside the penalty box.
Rose and junior forward Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) teamed up for the third goal of the match in the 55th minute. Coffin’s through pass was collected by Rose and her shot from 20 yards out flew over Frost into the top right corner of the net.
The final goal of the match came in the 81st minute when Corvino’s touch pass to the right sideline was one-timed by sophomore midfielder Eleonore Valencia (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) toward the middle of the box where Stever headed the ball into the far side of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Carnegie Mellon out-shot the Lions 18-3 in the game. Frost made three saves in the loss while Carnegie Mellon freshman goalkeeper Anya Rosen (La Cañada, Calif.) made one save as she collected the first win of her career.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 22 when they host Denison University at Gesling Stadium. The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. with the men’s soccer team taking on Mount Union beforehand.
