Stats
Sept. 3 – (ADA, Ohio) – A three goal effort by the women's soccer team led the Tartans to a 3-2 win over host Ohio Northern on the second day of the Ohio Northern Shootout played on the campus of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Carnegie Mellon improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears fall to 1-1.
Carnegie Mellon had a two goal lead at the half after junior forwad Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Mary Ashe (Rockville, Md./Wootton) scored within seven minutes of each other. Howard scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute of play when she turned at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a low shot to the right side of the net, beating Polar Bear keeper Barbie Krieger for the Tartans first goal of the season. Ashe added to the one goal lead with a header in the 42nd minute. Junior defender Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) sent a cross towards the net which Ashe flicked in with her head.
Ohio Northern came out in the second half ready to cut the deficit and did so just 3:56 into the start of play when Diana Smith scored off a corner kick. A little over three minutes later, Tartan sophomore defender Sarah DeWath (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) saved a ball off the goal line to hold on to the Carnegie Mellon 2-1 lead.
The Polar Bears did get the equalizer though, when Angie Pisut converted a penalty kick past Tartan sophomore keeper Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) at the 67:26 mark.
With just over 15 minutes to play, Howard came through again for the Tartans with the game winner. This time, Howard, on the right side of the box, received a slotted pass across the middle from junior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and beat Krieger, who came off her line, to the left post.
For the game, each team had eight shots on goal and each had seven corner kicks. Adams finished with five saves, while Krieger stopped five as well.
Head Coach Sue Willard was pleased with her team's effort over the weekend stating, "We would have liked to come away with two wins from this quality tournament but we rebounded today from a hard fought loss against Otterbein (1-0) and defeated a formidable opponent in Ohio Northern. It was a total team effort." Ohio Northern defeated #15 Stevens Institute 5-1 on Saturday during the first day’s action.
The Tartans stay on the road for their next contest when they meet Westminster College on September 6 for a 5:00 p.m. start.
