Stats
Oct. 15 - (NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon women's soccer team won their first University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the season Sunday, October 15. The Tartans defeated the Violets of New York University 2-1 thanks to a two goal effort by junior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio). The Tartans move to 5-6-1 on the season and 1-3 in UAA play, as the Violets drop to 5-6-1 and 0-4 in the UAA.
Stever, who has now scored five of the Tartans last six goals, wasted little time getting the Tartans on the scoreboard. Stever took a cross from junior forward Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) at 3:20 into regulation and headed it into the net to give the Tartans the early 1-0 lead.
NYU's senior midfielder Jennifer Tavares knotted things up with just 34 tics left in the first half off a pass from freshman defender Sarah Lensing.
With just over ten minutes to play in the game, Stever would cash in again, this time with her team leading seventh goal. She took a through ball from sophomore forward Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and fired a shot past Violets junior goalkeeper Katie Barnes to the top right corner of the net for the game-winner. This marks the second two goal game for Stever this season, her last came against Juniata September 16.
The Tartans out shot the Violets 10-6 and had the advantage on corners, 5-2. Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) finished with two saves, while Barnes had six.
The Tartans will travel to Erie, Pennsylvania, Sunday, October 22 to play Penn State Behrend. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
