Women’s Soccer Tames Lions; Wins 6-0

Oct. 22 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Sophomore forward Abby Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and junior midfielder Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo.) led the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team to a decisive 6-0 victory over the visiting Penn St. Behrend Lions on Sunday, October 22 at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans up their record to 6-6-1 on the season while the Lions drop to 10-5-1.
Coffin registered three goals on the day with Rose assisting her on all three. Coffin headed in a corner from Rose in the fourth minute to start the scoring and followed that goal with a one-time shot from 15 yards out that found its way into the net in the 13th minute.
Junior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored two goals in the win, bringing her season total to nine. In the 20th minute, Coffin’s shot was knocked away by Behrend goalkeeper Christine Wiktorowski, but Stever was there to punch in the rebound to make it 3-0. Coffin registered her hat trick in the 40th minute when she volleyed in another corner kick from Rose.
The score became 5-0 on an own goal by Penn St. Behrend in the 61st minute and Stever wrapped up the scoring in the 66th minute when she headed in a long free kick by sophomore defender Sarah DeWath (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista). Stever’s header was nicely placed over the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) started the game for the Tartans and sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Siefert (Naugatuck, Conn./Westover) played the second half and made one save. Wiktorowski made six saves for the Lions in the loss. Carnegie Mellon took 14 shots while Penn St. Behrend took two shots in the game.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team will be in action again on Friday, October 27 when they host University Athletic Association opponent Case Western Reserve. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 pm.
