Tartan Women Triumph in Home Opener

Stats

Sept. 10 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The solid play of the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team continued Saturday afternoon as they easily defeated visiting Washington & Jefferson 5-0. The Tartans move to 3-0-0 on the season with the Presidents falling to 1-3-0.

The Tartans started their scoring 24:22 into the game when sophomore midfielder Jessica Howard (Brookline, Ma.) headed in a free kick from sophomore defender Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West). Just before halftime sophomore midfielder Erica LeCount (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) scored Carnegie Mellon’s second goal when she received a pass from junior midfielder Lisa Pascoli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and took a shot toward the left post that crossed the goal line moments before Presidents’ goalie Jackie Foltz got her hands on it.

In the second half the Tartans padded their lead with goals by senior forward Hallie Dumont (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), senior midfielder Vanessa McClain (Olmsted Twp., Ohio/Magnificat), and freshman forward Abigail Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon).

Dumont scored in the 62nd minute when she took senior forward Nadya Yaghoubi’s (Scarsdale, N.Y.) pass and kicked a low hard shot that found its way through Foltz’s legs. McClain made it 4-0 in the 80th minute when she took a crossing pass from LeCount and one-timed it into the empty left corner of the goal. Coffin finished off the scoring in the 87th minute after Rose had her penalty kick blocked by Foltz. Rose got the rebound on the left baseline and chipped it back toward the center of the box where Coffin’s head bonked it into the net. That goal by Coffin puts her as the team leader in goals with four in this young season.

Tartan freshman goalie Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) recorded her third straight shutout thanks to a stellar effort by the Tartan defense. Senior Mollie Salpeter (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), junior Andrea Maresca (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), freshman Sarah DeWath (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista), and Rose put pressure on the Presidents’ forwards and created lots of scoring chances in the process. These four were part of the reason the Tartans were able to outshoot W&J 30-0 for the game.

The Tartans will next suit up on Tuesday, September 13 when they host Penn State Behrend for a 7:30 p.m. start.
