Carnegie Mellon Women’s Soccer Picked 5th in Preseason Poll

Aug. 23 - (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The University Athletic Association (UAA) released the women’s soccer preseason poll for the 2005 season with Carnegie Mellon showing in fifth place out of eight teams. The voting was conducted by the league coaches.

The Tartans received a total of 24 points, while Washington University (Mo.) was selected to finish first with four first place votes and a total of 45 points. The University of Chicago was narrowly beaten out finishing with 44 points for a second place seeding. Emory University (35 points) and the University of Rochester (34) sit above Carnegie Mellon.

Washington will look to repeat as UAA Champions after finishing 2004 with a 6-1 league mark, a 17-3-1 overall record and a final regular season national ranking of 11. The University of Chicago finished the regular season with a top 15 ranking and lost to the 2004 National Champions of Wheaton College (Ill.) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Emory also competed in the NCAA Tournament winning their first game before falling to Lynchburg 1-0 in the second round.

The Tartans will look to follow their ECAC Championship in 2004 with a top finish in the UAA and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. League play starts October 2 when Chicago visits Gesling Stadium for a 1:30 p.m. start.
