Women’s Soccer Wins 4-0

Sept. 24 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Senior midfielder Margaret Beck (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) came through for Carnegie Mellon in the second half, scoring twice to lead the Tartans to a 4-0 win over the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders. Carnegie Mellon improves to 6-0-1, while Mount Union drops to 3-5-0.

After a scoreless first half, Beck got the Tartans on the board in the 52nd minute when she took a cross from junior defender Andrea Maresca (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and placed it inside the right post. Beck connected again in the 67th minute when senior midfielder Kristin Bevilacqua-Linn’s (Carmel, N.Y.) cross from the left corner was flicked by senior forward Nadya Yaghoubi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) over to Beck in the middle of the penalty box, upon which Beck punched the ball into the left corner of the net. These were Beck’s second and third goals on the year.

Abigail Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon)scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute. Coffin headed a pass from sophomore midfielder Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) past Purple Raider goalie Seana Kelly and then proceeded to tap the ball into the empty net.

Freshman midfielder Laura Steidel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) wrapped up the scoring in the 78th minute when she headed in sophomore midfielder Kasey Stever’s (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) corner kick. That goal is Steidel’s first career goal.

Carnegie Mellon out shot Mount Union 17-5 and freshman goalie Mary Ashe (Rockville, Md./Wootton) made two saves, while recording her fourth shutout of the season.

Carnegie Mellon will be in action next on Tuesday, September 27th when they host Allegheny College. The game is scheduled to commence at 7:30 p.m.
